I did pick option one on the euclid poll, my reasoning partly being that i do agree with everyone’s points on the preceding lyrics but it’s the “for me” line after that makes me always go for the “this is what happened and this is what i must do” route, like needing to be someone new because of all the ways the speaker’s life is untenable and poses danger if they can’t change to match, so despite the immensity of their grief and nostalgia the singer realizes that being trapped in it will effectively kill them, hence the attempt to balance moving forward and changing (maybe you could link back to songs like dywtylm and ascensionism and dark signs and others that i’m forgetting but i’m not making a full post) as a means of fighting to create a new self-image that doesn’t have to be based on anyone else, and to fix their heart (bc i can’t resist using that line anywhere and everywhere that i can.)
Though honestly i could just scrap all that and say “that’s what’s the most meaningful and impactful to me and my situation so that’s the one I go with” bc that’s really what that is at the end of the day, and I love that other people can connect to it in other ways! It’s the best part of these, sure you can have one person look at something in a lot of ways but when you have several people posing theories or talking about interpretations of the lyrics, whether it’s expanding on and agreeing with them or proposing other ideas or directional offshoots (in a polite manner, I’d hope, though I know that doesn’t always happen)
The second theory really is beautiful though, the idea that you’re realizing once the dust has settled that you’ve already changed just through those experiences, especially in tmbte, without even having noticed in the moment, bc it was different from the ways described in those aforementioned songs in addition to things like rain or especially even when the bough breaks. I haven’t read a ton on the idea but yeah, I just really like what I’ve seen folks write about it so far.
I don’t really have a purpose to this post beyond explaining why i picked the first option and trying to make it clear that I’m also not disparaging the other one at all 😅
